Life on GLP-1: Unexpected Changes to My Relationship with Food

When I started GLP-1 medications, I was caught off guard by how much my relationship with food changed. Here are a few surprises I didn't see coming:
1. Craving Fresh Fruits and Vegetables
As my appetite has shifted, I've found myself craving fresh fruits and vegetables more than before. My sweet tooth has all but disappeared, and I now find myself reaching for refreshing, nutrient-packed foods like berries, cucumbers, and leafy greens.
2. Nighttime Hunger Surges
During the day, I often feel no hunger at all, but suddenly, around 9 PM, I'm hit with an intense craving. It's like my body realizes I haven't eaten enough or my metabolism is revving up for the night.
3. Food Aversions and Texture Sensitivity
I used to love certain foods, but after starting GLP-1, I've developed a kind of dislike for some, especially greasy or overly sweet foods. Textures have also become more of a sensitivity for me—something I didn't expect.
4. Feeling Full Faster But Still Craving Snacks
GLP-1 can make you feel full after eating smaller portions, but it doesn't stop me from craving a snack later. It's a weird combo of feeling physically full but mentally wanting to snack.
5. Digestive Issues
I sometimes experience digestive discomfort when I do eat—especially after meals that are rich in fiber or fat. It's a balancing act of figuring out what my body needs and what it will tolerate.
6. Food Still Brings Joy
I thought that with my suppressed appetite, the joy of eating and my desire for good food would fade—but surprisingly, it hasn't. I still look forward to well-prepared meals, and food remains an enjoyable experience despite the changes in my hunger patterns.
Eating while on GLP-1 definitely requires a little trial and error. There's no one-size-fits-all approach, but I've prioritized listening to my body. Paying attention to my hunger cues, figuring out which foods work for me, and giving my body the nutrients it needs has helped me stay on track. Despite the unexpected changes, I've learned to adapt, and I'm more mindful than ever about nourishing my body in a way that aligns with my goals.
